Guangdong Provincial Professional Title Certificate
issued to Cai Danjie, Craft Artist in Ceramic Arts, 2024]
This is a government-issued professional title, not an
association membership or a marketing label. In China's
professional title system for craft, the grades run from
Assistant Craft Artist, to Craft Artist, to Senior Craft
Artist, to Full Senior Craft Artist. Cai Danjie holds the
second of these. Honorific titles such as "Master of Arts and
Crafts" belong to a separate system and are not claimed here.
What he makes
Fully wheel-thrown zhuni clay teapots, typically 80 to 120 ml,
in three classic Chaozhou forms:
Duoqiu (掇球) — 120 ml, 7 cm tall, 4 cm mouth, 80 g
Siting (思亭) — 80 ml, 6.5 cm tall, 4 cm mouth, 70 g
Dezhong (德钟) — 120 ml, 8 cm tall, 5 cm mouth, 130 g
Each pot is thrown, trimmed, assembled and finished by hand,
then fired in Chaozhou. Kiln yield runs at roughly 60 to 70
percent.
Where he works
Chaozhou, Guangdong Province — the production region for
Chaozhou hand-thrown zhuni teaware. The craft was inscribed on
China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014 and
is protected as a National Geographical Indication product.
