In Chaoshan his name sits alongside Meng Chen and Yi Gong — the three small-pot makers whose forms local tea drinkers have used for generations. Of the three, Siting is the one you reach for when the tea deserves attention: a low rounded body, a lid that sits slightly proud, a spout that pours clean and stops clean.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis one is made in Chaozhou, in zhuni — the red clay dug locally here — and thrown by hand on the wheel in the Chaozhou way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is fully hand-thrown. No mould is used at any stage. The body is pulled up from a spinning lump of clay; the spout, handle, and lid are then cut, shaped, and fitted by hand. The lid is fitted to this pot and no other. It will not fit another.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eZhuni shrinks heavily in the kiln, and pots crack, warp, and go out of round on the way through — of any batch, six or seven in ten come out usable. The rest go back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e80 ml\u003c\/strong\u003e. Three small cups — the traditional Chaoshan pour, where the pot is emptied completely into three cups set in a triangle and refilled straight away. This is the size gongfu tea was built around, not a scaled-down version of something larger. At 70 g it is light enough to lift, pour, and set down with one hand, which is how it is meant to be used.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWHY FULLY HAND-THROWN MATTERS\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShaped from start to finish at the wheel by Cai Danjie, each pot demands sustained control of the clay, followed by careful cutting, fitting, and refinement. Nothing is mechanically repeated: the proportions, balance, lid fit, and pouring character belong to this individual pot. In 2024 he was certified in ceramic techniques under Guangdong Province’s professional title system.
